Bring It! Tony Horton’s New Book
Bring It! is Tony Horton’s recently released new book on exercise and fitness. In his book, Horton, creator of P90X, brings together a lifetime of personal training in the fitness industry. As of this writing, the author is on a book signing tour where you can do a group workout with him and afterwards get him sign your book and take a picture with you. I am heading to Arlington, VA next week to do just that. Since working out with him in P90X and in several P90X One on One dvds, I have wanted to meet the iron man who is now fifty two years of age.
In nothing less than Horton style, Tony starts by having readers to take a look at their current fitness level. He goes on to stress that no workout program is right for everyone. You have to individualize an exercise program to get the most out of it. Like P90X, Tony talks about how your muscles hit a plateau after doing the same things over and over. He reminds us that we need to mix it up to get muscle confusion and response.
As far as the workout routines, he lays out the book in three sections. He labels them the Beginner’s Workout, the Striver’s Workout, and the Warrior’s Workout. Each workout progressively gets more challenging as you get stronger. Tony includes exercises for the six basic areas he trains in P90X: cardio, upper body, lower body, arms, core, and flexibility.
He also spends a good amount of time talking about nutrition and his thoughts on what to eat and what supplements to use. Unlike P90X, Tony includes a thirty day cleanse. He teaches his readers why he has cut out caffeine, alcohol, sugar and processed foods, gluten, animal products and dairy.
With 286 pages, this complete book is for the fearless and focused. Don’t get too anxious about the length of the book though. Tony leaves you with some recipes at the end of the book and there area several pictures demonstrating the exercise moves.
I think this book is an excellent supplement for anyone who has done a Tony Horton program. I think it reminds us of Tony’s training and adds a little more flavor, especially with the cleanse. I think this would be a difficult introduction to Tony Horton, however.
You can watch someone else do an exercise and repeat the performance. This is why I like Beachbody workouts. I push play, watch, listen, and repeat the performance of the trainer and class. You can’t really do that as effectively with a book.
Don’t get me wrong. I learned a lot from reading Muscle Magazine and from reading some early Bill Phillips work. I was already into fitness when I read those publicataions though, so it was more like expanding my knowledge rather than teaching me something new.
Overall, I was surprised by the unexpected release of Bring It. This is Tony’s first book. It is the culmination of all his training. I am delighted because I am absorbing more of Tony’s philosophy. I think this book will be a good travel companion for workouts on the road. And, if you like Tony’s sense of humor, expect to see it threaded throughout this work. Two thumbs up, Tony! You are still bringing it!
