Yoga Booty Ballet – Hip Hop Abs

I pushed play for the first time today on a funky Beachbody workout with Teigh McDonough and Gillian Marloth. The name of the program is Yoga Booty Ballet Live – Hip Hop Abs, and it’s from their Yoga Booty Ballet series. I wasn’t sure what if I’d like it or not. Like other workout programs, I watched the video before trying to participate in the routine. It looked like they were dancing and having fun. The fun part I get, but let me tell you….I can’t dance!

Teigh and Gillian team up to deliver easy to learn dance moves that keep your body moving. You can let loose and have fun because you’re in the privacy of your own home. It’s not all about learning Hip Hop dance moves though. The workout starts and ends with some yoga moves. Don’t get scared about the word “ballet” in the title. Other Yoga Booty Ballet (YBB) workouts incorporate some ballet stretching, but this routine does not.

It starts with some yoga meditation. You’ve got to experience this a few times before you can make sound decisions on whether it adds to your physical and mental well-being. If you just watch other people meditate on your television set or fast forward, you may miss an important part of learning to balance your mind and body, of being able to turn off the stresses of daily living and put your focus fully on your health and body.

The program then moves to a dance routine which incorporates the constant beat of drumming in the background. If you’re not a natural born dancer, don’t worry. Teigh and Gillian show you a few steps that you’ll do a few times. Then, they’ll add a few more steps and repeat the routine. I started picking up some of the moves easily. I knew that like any new routine, I’ll get better with practice.

I’d rate this workout as a low intensity cardio routine with great moves from getting limber. No, I don’t mean getting limber like doing 92 minutes of extreme yoga. I’d have to pull out my P90X Yoga X for that. I did find that this routine was great for loosing my hips. I’m in my mid-40s. Today, I was feeling a little tight in the hip area. I’m feeling great now that I did a little hip hop. (Quit laughing! It was fun.)

I think the whole YBB series will be good for strengthening core muscles and stretching from head to toe. It’s important to have a variety of exercises in your weekly routine that strengthen your muscles, increase your aerobic capacity, and keep your muscles limber.

I didn’t realize how important having strong core muscles (basically anything between your belly button and knees) until I felt my posture getting better, I could suddenly do things like side planks, and I could finally do a chin up. Yeah – who would’ve thought that strong core muscles were important for doing pull ups and chin ups?

Well, in addition to the dance moves, this program has a floor routine for abs usinging a YBB squishy ball. I’d never worked out with a squishy ball before. It was easy to work with and helped me keep proper form. It never ceases to amaze me that no matter how many different Beachbody workouts I do for abs, they’re all different. Abs were always boring for me, so when I went to the gym….I didn’t do them. Now that I’ve found variety and I can see muscle definition in my ab area, I love working my abs.

I’m sure that Yoga Booty ballet won’t be for everyone, but if you like to dance or want a routine that doesn’t feel like exercise…or if you just want a routine to work on your core muscles or flexibility, YBB might be a nice addition to your library.
