Tony Horton P90X One on One Volume 3 Training Ground for P90X:MC2

By On August 14, 2010 No Comments

Yes. The sequel to Tony Horton’s P90X Extreme Home Training System has a scheduled release date in late 2011, but you can get into the action now! Volume III of the Tony Horton One on One series is the training ground for production of the new 12 dvd extreme training program.

Volumes I and II of Tony Horton’s One on One series brought P90X graduates a new crazy only Tony extreme workout each month. The workouts take place in Tony’s home gym. He does the exercises. There are no other participants. It is what Beachbody calls raw with the man himself.

Volume III introduces quite a bit of change, so get ready P90X grads! The Tony Horton One on One series is now called P90X One on One. It is a program designed for those who have already gone through the P90X program.

It is important to already have the basic exercises in P90X down before going on to P90X One on One. You need to already understand nutrition, warming up, stretching as well. This is a graduate program that builds on your P90X foundation. It is a continuation and improvement of the One on One series.

Unlike the P90X program, it does not come with a Food Guide or workout schedule. Most graduates use the P90X exercise schedule and plug in appropriate One on One workouts as they receive them.

P90X One on One workouts are almost twice the length of the first two volumes of One on Ones. The workouts will be 50 – 60 minutes in length – closer to what P90X graduates are used to from the XP90 dvd workout program.

Volume III is still unscripted and uses the science of muscle confusion to prevent boredom, lessen injuries, and keep your body working toward your fitness goals. Oh, and you will still get some free stuff along the way. The August workout includes free dog tags with a One on One engraving.

The August workout is actually the second disc. It is named ARX2. You guessed it… the new Ab Ripper! Ab Ripper X to a new extreme. It is twice as long as the original P90X Ab Ripper X. Ouch!

The first disc in Volume III is Chest, Back and Balls. The exercises in this workout are based on body weight. No bands or weights are required. The balls in the title refer to exercise balls by the way. (smile)

P90X One on One works like a magazine subscription. You get a new disc to add to your collection each month. It arrives automatically to your mailbox every month. You are automatically invoiced each month and pay as you go. The regular price for a workout dvd is $19.95. As a coach, your discount brings this price down to $14.95 per dvd.

Back to the “testing ground” I mentioned at the beginning of this post. P90X One on One workouts are going to be used to create and refine the workouts for P90X:MC2. What is cooler than that is the casting for the P90X sequel will consist primarily of Team Beachbody Coaches.

As a coach who purchases all 12 P90X One on One Volume III dvds by July 2011, you will get a 50% discount code for P90X:MC2. Even if you start your subscription now and add your missing volumes by July of next year, you will still qualify to get this special P90X sequel discount.

One more thing P90Xers….remember P90X Yoga X? You know the 92 minute power yoga that we all whine about in the begining and grow to love as we master the workout? Well, there will not be a 92 minute yoga workout in Volume III. Because of the feedback on “time” from P90X grads, there will actually be two dvds. The yoga is 60 minutes, and there is a separate stretch dvd. If you want to do extended yoga workout, you can work both dvds back to back. It is now your choice!

Turbo Fire vs. Shaun T’s Insanity Workout Review

By On May 31, 2010 No Comments

I know there are questions out there about the differences between Shaun T’s Insanity home fitness workout program and Chalene Johnson’s new Turbo Fire which is scheduled for release in June. Afterall, both of these Beachbody workouts are based on the science of HIIT (high intensity interval training).

I decided not to take on Insanity when it was released last year. Insanity was developed as an extreme cardio program to challenge top athletes. I did not feel that my fitness level was quite where it should be to take on Shaun T’s class. I always say you should determine your current fitness goals and take on an activity that helps you reach your goals.

This summer, I plan on taking on Chalene Johnson in Turbo Fire. Insanity is a 60 day extreme program that should be followed by a break to allow the body to recover. Turbo Fire on the other hand, is designed to be used alone or in conjunction with a strength training program such as P90X or ChaLean Extreme.

Chalene included a “modifier” in Turbo Fire to allow all fitness levels to enjoy the benefits of her HIIT cardio program. If you cannot do what Chalene is doing in the class, that is ok. Just follow the “modifier” who will show you how to modify the exercise.

The basic Turbo Fire program is designed as a 90 program. The Deluxe version will take the fitness schedule out 120 days. And, if you combine Turbo Fire with a strength training program, you will actually have a year long workout schedule planned out for you. How cool is that?

I look forward to adding Turbo Fire variety into my workouts. After you work out with P90X for a while, the limited cardio routines (Plyometrics, Kenpo X or Cardio X) start to get just that…routine! When I started working out with ChaLean Extreme, I found the same problem. I needed more variety with cardio workouts.

The basic program had two cardio workouts (Burn Intervals and Burn It Off). I ordered the seven extra workouts for ChaLean Extreme just so I could have the added variety. That added three new cardio workouts (Fat-Burn Challenge, Get-Lean Intervals, and Exteme Intervals) to the mix, but now I want more.

What I love about the promise of Turbo Fire is it is purely Chalene Johnson but without the “dancy” choreograpy found in some of her earlier programs such as Turbo Jam. This is the athlete. This is the coach. This is the personal trainer. This is Chalene Johnson.

ChaLean Extreme Ab Burner & Recharge

By On March 4, 2010 No Comments

I had a slower workout tonight. I needed it following the brutal leg routines I did yesterday. I started with ChaLean Extreme’s Ab Burner and followed up with the Recharge routine.

I expected Chalene Johnson, also know as Chalene the Machine at my house, to be a little more challenging in her ab routine. Maybe…just maybe, my abdominal muscles are getting stronger in my quest for flatter abs. I have not tried any of her more advanced ab workouts, yet.

Prior to Beachbody, I tried just about every ab exerciser, machine and piece of equipment I could find in the gym. I have found that the variety of ab exercises in Beachbody workouts simply amazes me and I don’t need to go to the gym or buy any extra home gym stuff.

I think I would probabaly compare Ab Burner to either Ab Ripper 100 or Ab Ripper 200 in Power 90. It is not in the same burn level as the P90X Ab Ripper X. This a beginner level ab routine that lasts just over ten minutes. The next time I do abs, I think I will switch to Extreme Abs or I’ve Got Abs. Maybe I will alternate these two workouts with Extreme Core. I think Chalene has some challenging moves coming up in these workouts. I guess I should be happy that it is time for me to move on to a harder ab program.

Recharge was a short (less than 21 minutes) stretching and yoga combination. How could you not love that? This workout gave a lot of attention to stretching your back and hamstrings. I really enjoyed the stretch. It reminded me somewhat of P90X X Stretch. You know, that day when it just feels so good to work out? (I am not referencing the 92 minute P90X Yoga X. Now, that’s torture! A true love/hate relationship.)

The next time I do a stretching routine with ChaLean Extreme, I may try the Dynamic Flow Yoga. I can see myself staying with this one for a while though. It felt so good to have a nice slow full body stretch. The short duration of the workout also allowed me to fit in abs tonight.

The Recharge workout could be done by any fitness level, including beginner. Chalene does a great job demonstrating how to modify different moves and positions to make the stretch either more challenging or less intensive to fit your current capabilities. I enjoyed the stretch. I think you will, too!

Ten Minute Crusher Pack

By On October 27, 2009 No Comments

Since I knew October’s One on One training session came with a jump rope, I was expecting the 10 Minute Crusher Pack to use a jump rope to do cardio intervals. I didn’t expect the workout inside. Tony Horton is a crazy trainer who will keep you entertained, motivated, and pushing forward.

The 10 Minute Crusher Pack is actually divided in three 10 minute segments. The first segment is called 20-12 Abs and appropriately works your abdominal muscles. Tony put together a series of ab exercises that alternate between hanging from a chin up bar and work on the floor.

The ab routine is a nice variation to through into your P90X Extreme Home Training workout plan if you get tired of Ab Ripper X or just need a change. It is more challenging than Ab Ripper 100 and Ab Ripper 200 which are both ab routines from Power 90. The 20-12 Abs is more comparable with Ab Ripper X but you will be using the chin up bar a lot to isolate and work those tough abdominal muscles.

The second workout session packs ten minutes full of extreme exercises for legs. It is called Legs of Gold. If you know Tony, then you know that regular squats and lunges will never do. He likes to “mix it up” with any and every variation he sees or can dream up.

If you are new to fitness or to Tony Horton, this leg workout will give you a challenge and probably remind you that you worked legs a day or two later. I cannot compare the intensity of Legs of Gold with the P90X Legs and Back exercise routine. The P90X version is butt burner in my book.

The downside of the P90X Legs and Back workout is the length. You don’t always have an hour to exercise or you might want to just work legs or add them to something besides your back routine. That’s where I think Legs of Gold belongs in my fitness routine. I never thought I would ever be happy with a ten minute leg routine. I guess if you know how, you can get an effective workout in ten minutes.

The last exercise segment is Shadow Boxing. This is a cardio segment that uses the familiar jab, cross, hook, uppercut, kick, block…. It’s like graduating from P90X Kenpo X or Chalene Johnson’s Turbo Jam and then, putting it all together in a fun, playful way.

So, what’s the big deal about a jump rope? The jump rope is used as a warm up and for cardio intervals between segments. Jumping rope is an excellent aerobic activity. I never was very good at jumping rope as a kid. Now, I have a reason to practice. I know I don’t have to be perfect. I just have to do my best. All I have to do is keep my body moving. I can even “jump rope” without using a rope.

Burning Fat, Blasting Abs, Turbo Jam’s Ab Jam Workout

By On October 8, 2009 No Comments

My abs were still burning from working out with Tony Horton’s a Core Ball Sandwich the other day, but I decided to put in Chalene Johnson’s 20 minute Ab Jam workout from her Turbo Jam series anyway. Half of this routine does standing ab exercises. The other half is performed on the floor.

What I really like about Beachbody workouts is each trainer has their own style for working out abs. I used to be one of those people who would go to the gym and walk by anything that looked like it might involve abs. I didn’t like working my abdominal muscles because it involved pain.

My neck and lower back always seemed to hurt when I did ab exercises. I didn’t know I needed a trainer to keep me motivated, correct my form, and give me options for getting my mid-section in shape.

The standing portion of Ab Jam feels a lot like the other Turbo Jam workouts. It’s a little bit punching and kicking combined with music and Chalene’s style of fun. It’s true that you forget you’re working out when you’ve got a Turbo Jam DVD playing.

Here’s a hint for Ab Jam…warm up with the 20 Minute Cardio session. You’ll get your cardio, have a great warm up and keep the fat burning while working your abs with Ab Jam.

I will say that when we moved to the floor session, I knew for sure we were focusing on abs! Some of the moves Chalene uses are killer on the obliques and not once did I feel pain in my neck or lower back.

She reminds you to lead with your shoulder (not your elbow) when you’re doing crunches to keep the pressure off your neck. When doing standing crunches, she’ll tell you to lift your “hip” not your knee when doing side crunches.

Form is everything folks! I can appreciate a trainer who knows the common mistakes we all make and gently educates us on how to make each move more effective while reducing the risk of injury.

I like to combine the 20 minute Turbo Jam cardio with the Ab Jam workout which is also 20 minutes in length. I think I need to give my abs some recovery time now. I feel like I just did Ab Ripper X or Yoga Belly from P90X. I think I need to go to the kitchen and refuel now. Mommy!

Power 90 Ab Ripper 200

By On August 27, 2009 No Comments

Ouch! Power 90’s Ab Ripper 200 is 200 ab ouchy reps! It uses the same ten abdominal exercises as Ab Ripper 100, but instead of ten reps for each exercise, you’re doing twenty. That makes a significant difference in the burn. It will take a while for me to master the Ab Ripper 200.

If I compare Ab Ripper 200 to the ab workouts in P90X, I’d have to say it feels more like the Yoga Belly 7 rather than the infamous Ab Ripper X. Ab Ripper X is still on top of the charts for the toughest ab routine I’ve ever done. I’m not sure how the new Rev Abs program will compare. I did the first Rev Abs workout when Beachbody sent it to me as a preview dvd.

I didn’t find that workout as extreme as Ab Ripper X, but I have to keep in mind that I was only doing the first routine of a 90 day program based on increasing your metabolism, buring fat, and focusing exercise movements on the core and abdominal muscles. I have a feeling that when Rev Abs is released that it will be a somewhat challenging ab program. (Get ready, it’s coming out this fall.)

Power 90 Ab Ripper 100

By On August 25, 2009 No Comments

Ab Ripper 100 is one of the ab routines in Tony Horton’s Power 90 Fat Burning System. I had heard of Ab Ripper 100 from P90X. In Ab Ripper X from P90X, Tony says that this isn’t Ab Ripper 100 or Ab Ripper 200, this is Ab Ripper 336. After finally doing Ab Ripper 100, that statement made more sense.

Ab Ripper X is 16 minutes of hard ab work. Each exercise has 25 reps except for the massive amount of Mason Twists done at the end. Oh, and let’s not forget the “yoga belly seven” ab work on the Yoga X video. That’s P90X. Let’s get back to Power 90 and Ab Ripper 100.

Ab Ripper 100 consists of 10 ab exercises. Each exercise has 10 reps for a total of “100″ reps. Most of the exercises were not excruciating because we only had 10 reps to get through. The hardest one for me was the full body crunch done right at the end. There’s always at least one ab exercise that’s difficult for me!

Can’t wait to try out Ab Ripper 200! Do I dare press play on Tony Horton’s One on One Core Ball Sandwhich? Oh, I will. How about you? Bring it, Tony!

Turbo Jam: Ab Jam

By On August 15, 2009 No Comments

When I first looked at this dvd, I thought twenty minutes was an incredibly long time to be working on my abs. I’ve got to tell you that the time just flew by. I’m not sure what it is about Turbo Jam or Chalene Johnson, but each workout is fun. Fun means you’ll keep doing it. Fun means you get through the workout before you realize you’re exercising…just kidding.

Keeping with the trademark of Beachbody workouts, Ab Jam uses cardio interval training to keep your heart pumping. You’re going to sweat, burn calories, melt fat, and pump up your metabolism.

The first half of the workout is standing. If you’re used to working your abs with crunches, a ball, or ab machines, you’ll be surprised at how many different ways you can work your abdominal muscles standing up.

You may not be comfortable doing standing ab exercises. Give it a chance and work through it. It’s probably just new to you. Some of the standing ab exercises are similar to those in Debbie Sieber’s Slim in 6. I also noticed some similarities with Tony Horton’s P90X Extreme Home Fitness System.

The second half of the workout moves to ab exercises on the floor. I learned some new moves. I was expecting something in between Slim in 6 and P90X’s Ab Ripper X or Yoga Belly 7. My favorite floor exercise in Ab Jam involves sitting on the floor with your hands on the floor behind you. Your knees are bent…feet off the floor. You then lean back and touch your knees to the left until they hit the floor. Then, your bring them to the right until they hit the floor, etc. This works the lower abs really good!

I’ve got a few more ab routines to review for you, so you’ll have plenty of information on how to get yourself a tight, flat set of abs. Still coming up: Turbo Jam Booty Sculpt & Abs, Tony Horton’s One on One Core Ball Sandwhich, and Brett Hoebel’s new 90 day ab solution Rev Abs.

Rev Abs isn’t available, yet. This Beachbody workout won’t be released until the fall; however, I have a preview dvd. It’s the first dvd in program. Getting free preview dvds of upcoming releases is one of the benefits of being a Beachbody Coach. Speaking of previews, I have an extra Tony Horton One on One Cardio Intervals dvd.

P90X Yoga X – Storm & Calm

By On June 17, 2009 2 Comments

What is it that keeps me coming back to Yoga X, a grueling 92 minutes of P90X extreme training? Is it the sweat that pours from my forehead and drips from my chin? Is it the challenge of completing a push up before going into each downward facing dog? Maybe it’s the thrill of making it through the first 45 minutes of the routine which seems more like cardio than any yoga I’ve ever done.

Yoga X is based on hatha yoga. If you think yoga is easy, you better be prepared to sweat! The first time I did this routine, I was wiped out after about the first 20 minutes. I followed the mantra of trainer Tony Horton who reminds us in each session of P90X to do our best and forget the rest.

This is one of the love/hate routines of P90X. As you focus on each breath and try to work through the discomfort of the pose, you’re secretly trying to watch the timer to see how much time is left in the strenuous pose. When you’ve completed the full routine, however, your whole body is transformed into a relaxed, fully stretched and peaceful state. Oh, it feels so good.

I look forward to Yoga X the day after I do a weight lifting routine because I know I’ll get a good stretch on the muscle tears I formed doing strength training exercised. It’s better than a hot tub for relieving back aches or a massage chair for relaxing the body.

I still struggle with pull ups, and I still struggle with a couple of the poses in Yoga X. That’s ok – I do my best, forget the rest. Over time, I get stronger, more flexible and better able to hold difficult yoga poses.

As with all the P90X workouts, the basic form is demonstrated and then, variations of the exercise are introduced so you can modify to better fit your fitness level. I like the fact that I can always relate to someone in the video. It’s nice to see a super athletic fitness professional float through the moves like there’s no struggle at all, but I relate more to the guy in the gray shorts who shakes in almost every move. He’s my hero. If he can do, I can keep on trying.

So what yoga moves are difficult for me? I’d have to say that the hardest two moves for me are the half moon and crane. I keep trying the half moon sequence. I can feel the stretch in my hamstrings, back, and glutes. I stumble. I fall. I try again. As for the crane, I’m not ashamed to say I do child’s pose in place of crane. I take a mini break rather than fighting against gravity to hold my body up on my elbows.

My favorite part of this Beachbody workout is the “Yoga Belly Seven”. It comes at the end of the routine right before the cool down series. Maybe knowing that the end is near is what keeps me looking forward to reaching this point? It’s not because it feels exhilarating while you’re doing these seven yoga exercises for the abs. My abs burn more during and after doing yoga abs exercises than working them at the gym on abdominal machines, using an ab roller, ab rocker, medicine ball or just doing crunches.

Like most people, I’ve tried a lot of ab exercise machines. I’d take Yoga Belly Seven over those machines any day. And if you really want to work your abs, try the P90X Ab Ripper X. It takes your abs to a new level. Of course you wouldn’t want to do Ab Ripper on the same day you’re doing Yoga X. Once you do P90X Yoga X, I don’t think you’ll want to try Ab Ripper in the same day anyway.

You’ll want to sit back and enjoy the accomplishment of making it through this challenge extreme training routine. You’ll be doing a cardiovascular, strength training, muscle toning, lean gaining, flexibility, core and ab burning, calming exercise routine. You’ll come to love those 92 minutes even if you don’t make it through the workout the first time you push play. Yoga X is definitely one of those routines you’ll want to rant and rave about on the community message boards.

Oh by the way, you can join our Beachbody community and use the message forums for free. It’s a great way to meet people who are doing the same routines as you. We encourage each other and listen to each other as we’re having a hard time. The message boards help you have accountability to stick with your program even when “life” tries to get in the way.

I found a forum that was starting for P90X at about the same time I was starting. This was set up for women in particular. I personally enjoy the understanding and support that comes from other women. We sure talked about Yoga X. We complained about the length of the routine and that it was too hard. Slowly, we worked through our rants and started posting raves…made it through Yoga X, it’s getting better. I truly believe that the message boards set Beachbody workouts apart from any other program available.

If you’re ready to start the P90X Extreme Training System and challenge yourself with Yoga X, I’m ready to help you define and meet your fitness goals as your personal coach. You can get your 13 DVD set here, but if you want to save 10% on your purchase, join the club. And, if you have an interest in helping other achieve their fitness goals, you might be interested in becoming a Beachbody coach yourself and saving 25% on all Beachbody products. Namaste.

Still Struggling with Pull Ups

By On May 31, 2009 2 Comments

What a beautiful day! It was sunny in Virginia – one of those days where you just want to get out and do something. So, I got out of bed early and ate a bowl of oatmeal with walnuts. I’ve found that to be one of the best combinations for giving me sustained energy in the morning. After discussing a few options with my partner over a cup of coffee, we decided to take our dogs for a walk and then, ride our motorcycles over to the gym for a workout.

Today was supposed to be my Beachbody P90X Chest and Back workout. I wanted to do a varied version of it at the YMCA though because I still cannot do pull ups. I used the assisted pull up station at the gym and was able to get a good burn throughout my back. Tony Horton, the trainer in the P90X Extreme Home Fitness DVDs program, demonstrates how to use resistance bands to simulate pull ups and how to use a chair for assisted pull ups. I’ve been working on these techniques, but many women just have trouble getting up over the bar.

I found an interesting article last month in Women’s Health Magazine. It was a four step article on how to do a pull up by doing things like increasing the amount of time you can keep your chin above the bar in a static hold and doing pull up negatives. Negatives are when you start above the bar and slowly lower your body down to keep tension on your back muscles. I tried these techniques, but I think I get the most work on my back when I use the assisted pull up machine at the gym.

Why is it that women have such difficulty with pull ups? Even as our upper body strength increases, we still seem to struggle with pulling our body weight above the bar. I’ve theorized that it is because most of us store our body weight between our knees and our belly button. This centers our weight at the bottom and may affect our lifting leverage. Ok, that’s my theory. Someday, I hope to conquer this thing called pull ups…even if it’s just one.

After the gym, we were incredibly hungry. We stopped at a local restaurant to have a delicious dish – Mango Talpia. If you haven’t tried it – wow! It was nice to have a healthy meal out. We spent the rest of the day riding along the Colonial Parkway in Williamsburg, Virginia. It’s really pretty this time of year.

Tonight, I plan on doing P90X Yoga X. I feel like I need a good stretch after the chest and back workout, especially after spending so much time working on pull ups. I can do most of the Yoga X routine, but I still struggle with the advanced moves. It’s really cool to see how far I’ve come in 60 days though. In the beginning, I never dreamed I’d be able to complete P90X Yoga X Dvd. The first time I did it, I had to turn it off after about thirty minutes. Now, it’s one of my favorite programs because I kept pressing play.

Oh, I’ve got to squeeze in P90X Ab Ripper X sometime this evening. I saved this one for home because I knew there was no way I could get the abs burn at the gym like I get using my Ab Ripper X Dvd.
